AGRIC DEPT. COLLABORATION WITH DP PROJECTS (GIZ, USAID, WFP, JICA ETC)

Collaboration with DP Projects (GIZ, USAID, WFP, JICA etc)

In the first quarter, Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) in partnership with Plant Protection and Regulatory Services(PPRSD) embarked on an exercise to interview vegetable farmers particularly tomato farmers on their knowledge on low risk agrochemicals in farming. 4 communities well known for tomato production in the district were visited namely; Akoradarko, Obooho, Begoro, Amanfuruso and Esaase.7 groups totalling 105 farmers were interviewed successfully. Based on this survey, we realised that farmers need further training in low risk agrochemicals to held reduce pesticide residue on agro produce.

In the second quarter of the year, the Department in collaboration with Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) and Plant Protection and Regulatory Services (PPRSD) embarked on an exercise to sensitize vegetable farmers on the use of low risk agrochemicals in farming due to the results of a survey conducted in the first quarter revealing the need to improve farmers knowledge in use of low-risk pesticides on vegetables. 33 communities in the district were visited to conduct sensitization with a few being Akoradarko, Obooho, Begoro, Amanfuruso, Dedeso, Amakom and Esaase.A total of  1,511 farmers were sensitized successfully.

As a follow up, the Department also collaborated with Ghana Enterprise Agency to train youth and women in the district on Food Processing and Fruit processing. The training was held concurrently at the Departments premises and also at Salvation Army church premises on the 8th-10th of September, 2025. Participants in total were 98 with 79 females and 19 males.

The Department also collaborated with Rainbow AgroSciences Ghana to conduct a field demonstration on cabbage using 2 of their products to address the challenge of insect pest attack and bacteria rot. The products used were (Fivestar, Azoxystrobin+Difeconazole fungicide and Herole plus insecticide). This demonstration is very important as the department is on a quest to reduce the usage of agrochemicals on crops. The outcome of the demonstration showed farmers that a lot of chemicals do not need to be combined to fight pests and diseases.
